Spiritual Side of Chiang Mai
Beyond work, cafés, and daily routines, Chiang Mai is also known for its spiritual and reflective side. Beyond work, cafés, and daily routines, Chiang Mai is also known for its spiritual and reflective side. Many travelers and digital nomads come here not only to work remotely, but to slow down, reset, and reconnect with themselves.
The city and its surroundings offer a wide range of options, including:
- Silent retreats
- Meditation retreats
- Mindfulness and Buddhist retreats
- Short spiritual workshops or weekend retreats
Some retreats last just a few days, while others run for a week or more, making them easy to fit into a longer stay.
On a personal level, Chiang Mai became a place of deep inner work for me. I attended a four-day silent retreat at Five Thousand Years (https://fivethousandyears.org), and it was one of the most intense and transformative experiences I’ve ever had. Silence forces you to face yourself fully — your thoughts, your patterns, your inner dialogue. There are no distractions, no conversations, just you and your own consciousness. It requires real resilience, both mentally and emotionally.
It’s hard to truly explain the depth of that experience in just a few lines.
If you want to truly understand what it was like, I wrote an entire post about it.

Transportation
Getting around Chiang Mai is simple and affordable. Depending on where you live, you may not need daily transportation at all, as many areas are walkable and well connected.
-
🚶♀️ Walking (best in central areas)
Old City / Nimman / Santitham are walkable — many places are 10–20 min away.
Cost: $0 -
🚗 Grab (most convenient)
Reliable for daily errands, evenings out, and airport rides.
Cost: $2–$5 (short rides) • $5–$8 (longer rides) -
🛵 Scooter / Motorbike Rental (most freedom)
Popular for longer stays and exploring outside the center (helmet + caution!).
Cost: $5–$8/day • $70–$120/month -
🛻 Songthaews + 🛺 Tuk-tuks (local transport)
Songthaews: red shared trucks — cheap, local, common.
Tuk-tuks: fun/quick but usually pricier and less common than Bangkok.
Cost: Songthaew $1–$2 (shared) • $3–$5 (private/negotiated) • Tuk-tuk $3–$7 -
🚲 Bicycle (short distances)
Good for nearby trips; not every road is bike-friendly.
Cost: $3–$5/day • $20–$40/month
Quick tip: If you live central, you can walk most days and use Grab or a scooter when needed.

evenings out & things to enjoy after work
Chiang Mai may be calm during the day, but evenings offer plenty of options to unwind. From craft cocktails and relaxed dinners to live music and easy weekend escapes, there’s a good balance between social life and nature.
Bray Company is one of the best spots in Chiang Mai for well-crafted cocktails. The atmosphere is stylish but relaxed, making it a great place to start the night or enjoy a quality drink without loud crowds. Ideal for cocktail lovers who appreciate attention to detail.
MIX Restaurant & Bar is a solid option if you want a proper dinner paired with a wide selection of alcoholic drinks. They offer an extensive menu of spirits and beverages, making it a good place to explore different drinks while enjoying a sit-down meal in a comfortable setting.
The North Gate Jazz Co-Op is a Chiang Mai classic for nightlife. Known for live jazz and jam sessions, it’s a lively place to grab a drink, listen to music, and meet people. It can get busy, but the energetic atmosphere makes it one of the best social spots in the city.

Wellness & Recovery in Chiang Mai
One of the things that makes Chiang Mai special is how easy it is to take care of your body and relax after work. From traditional Thai massages to modern recovery spas with saunas and ice baths, the city offers plenty of affordable options to recharge.
- 💆 Thai Massage
Thai massage is everywhere in Chiang Mai. You can easily find one-hour massages starting around $10 USD, and many shops are open every day on almost every street.
After a few days of cycling around the mountains, this is one of my favorite ways to recover. Sometimes you laugh, sometimes you yell during the stretches, but you always leave feeling relaxed.
- 🧊 Ice Baths & Saunas
Another activity I really enjoy is visiting spa and recovery centers with ice baths and saunas. It’s the perfect way to reset before starting a new week.
My favorite place is The Old City Spa, which offers ice baths, Finnish sauna, infrared sauna, magnesium hot baths, and herbal steam rooms.
Two hours cost about $14 USD, which is slightly more expensive than other places, but in my opinion it’s absolutely worth it.
Weekend Trips & Outdoor Escapes
Chiang Mai’s location makes it easy to escape the city and explore nature or nearby towns over the weekend.
- 🚐 Pai
Pai is a popular small town about 3 hours from Chiang Mai, known for its relaxed vibe, scenic landscapes, and waterfalls. It’s a favorite weekend getaway for nomads looking to slow down and connect with nature.
- 🚐 Chiang Rai
Chiang Rai is another great option for a short trip, famous for unique temples and quieter surroundings. It’s less touristic than Chiang Mai and works well for a 1–2 night escape.
- 🥾 Doi Suthep (Hiking & Views)
For a quick nature break without leaving the city, hiking around Doi Suthep is a great option. The area offers trails, viewpoints, and fresh air, plus the famous temple overlooking Chiang Mai — perfect for a half-day outdoor activity.
🍳 Thai Cooking Classes (Local Experience)
Taking a Thai cooking class is one of the best ways to experience Chiang Mai beyond cafés and nightlife. Many classes include a local market visit, hands-on cooking, and the chance to learn traditional Thai dishes in a relaxed, social setting. It’s a great activity to do solo or with other travelers, and an easy way to meet people while learning something new. Most classes last half a day and are beginner-friendly.

🤝 Group Workouts & Social Exercise
If you prefer working out with others, Chiang Mai has several active communities that organize regular group workouts and social fitness meetups. It’s a great way to stay active while also meeting other travelers and digital nomads.
HIIT Group (3x per week)
High-intensity group workouts organized several times per week. A fun and social way to train outdoors with others.

One of my favorite ways to enjoy Chiang Mai — cycling through nature.
Health Care & Insurance (Personal Experience)
I’ve had to use healthcare services in Thailand on several occasions, and overall the experience has been positive — especially when choosing the right providers.
I personally needed to see a doctor after a cycling accident, my mother required medical attention for bronchitis, and my girlfriend had a dental issue that required a dentist. In all cases, it was easy to find clinics and hospitals in Chiang Mai. Private hospitals and clinics were fast, professional, and English-speaking. Doctor visits usually start at around $50 USD, depending on the specialist.
That said, with dental care in particular, it’s important to choose carefully — while there are excellent clinics with fair prices, some places may overcharge foreigners. A bit of research goes a long way.
Personal Health Insurance Recommendation
I always travel with health insurance. Personally, I use Genki, and it’s been one of the simplest and most reliable options I’ve found as a digital nomad.
I’ve had to use it myself in the past, and the reimbursement process was smooth and stress-free.
Why I use Genki:
- Built for digital nomads and long-term travelers
- Worldwide coverage
- Simple pricing
- Easy signup with no residency requirements
If you’re looking for international health insurance for long-term travel, this is the one I personally use:
