Digital Nomad FAQ’s
How is the internet connectivity and speed in Jamaica?
The wifi connection is hit or miss, but you absolutely can find fast wifi there for video calls. See a breakdown of all wifi speeds here.
Is it easy to meet people and make friends in Jamaica?
I’d say yes it’s fairly easy. Jamaican people are quite friendly and also the people that travel to Jamaica are generally in a super friendly, outgoing mood.
How much should I budget for a month in Jamaica?
I’d be prepared to spend $3,000 – $4,000 a month here. You can do this cheaper, but generally speaking hotels and restaurants can get a bit pricy here (especially if you want A/C and you like meat.)
What are the best digital nomad cities in Jamaica?
I would spend your time in Montego Bay / Negril as it will be easier to find great wifi. Then on the weekends / days off head up into the mountains . explore around (or get a Starlink like I did)
Is Jamaica A Good Place For Digital Nomads?
No it isn’t. It’s not built for digital nomads or adventurers much at all. But it can be done!
I absolutely loved the history, culture, openness of the people and the food, so I would recommend it. However, it’s just going to be trickier than a place like Medellin, Lisbon, or Mexico City.
Visitor / Working Visas
For most nationalities, Jamaica offers a 90-day tourist stay upon arrival (visa-free for U.S., Canadian, U.K., and many EU citizens).

Best fit for digital nomads who want to stay longer than 90 days without working locally.
- Extensions available through Jamaica’s Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency (PICA).
- Typically granted for 30–90 additional days.
- Requires proof of accommodation, funds, and a valid reason for extension.
Work Permit
Best fit for digital nomads intending to work remotely while residing in Jamaica long-term.
- Valid for 1 year, renewable annually.
- Needed if you plan to legally conduct work from within Jamaica (even for foreign companies).
- Application usually requires a CV, proof of income, supporting documents, and a clean background check.
Residence Permit
Best fit for digital nomads committed to Jamaica as a base.
- Valid for 1 year, renewable.
- Can be a pathway to longer-term residence.
- Requires proof of financial means, medical and police records, and application through PICA.

- Nightlife – 4/5

- It’s not built for digital nomads no, but in Kingston and Montego Bay you can find cafes with greatwifi / coworks

Visas And How Long Can I Stay?
The information provided in this article is for general informational purposes only and does not constitute legal advice. Visa rules, entry requirements, and immigration policies for Jamaica are subject to change at any time and may vary depending on your nationality and individual circumstances. Before making any travel or residency decisions, please verify requirements directly with the Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency (PICA) of Jamaica or your nearest Jamaican embassy or consulate.
Tourist / Visa-Free Entry
- Many nationalities (including U.S., Canada, UK, EU) don’t need a visa to enter Jamaica for tourism.
- For those nationals, the standard stay is up to 90 days.
- The passport should generally be valid for the duration of stay (sometimes required to be valid 6 months beyond entry).
Extensions
- If you wish to stay beyond the initial allowed period (e.g. 90 days), you can apply for an extension with the Jamaican Passport, Immigration, and Citizenship Agency (PICA).
- How long the extension is granted can depend on your reasons, your ability to show sufficient funds, etc. ─ but it’s not automatic.
Digital Nomad / Remote Work
- Jamaica currently does not have a well-established or formal digital nomad visa program at this time.
Other Visas (Student, Work, Longer Stay)
For work (local employment), there is a work permit system via the Ministry of Labour and Social Security. If you’re hired by a Jamaican employer, that employer will need to help with some of the process.
If you plan to study in Jamaica (longer-term language courses, university, etc.), there are visas or permissions for student status. However, specific length and conditions depend on the institution, type of study, etc. You’ll need to check with PICA and the educational institution.
Hotels / Hostels For Digital Nomads
To be honest, Jamaica isn’t really built for adventurers. It’s pretty tough to even find hotels / hostels that don’t cater to all-inclusive folks who have little to no interest of leaving the resort for more than one or two guided tours.
That being said, it can be done
Sol’s Oasis – colive

- This was consistently the highest rated cowork, as mentioned we went there in June and when I arrived to check the place out I didn’t see anyone at the co-live so we decided not to stay, as empty colives aren’t worth-it (rather just have an AirBnB) but during busier seasons looks like there are a lot of people here, and it’s a killer spot for sure! When I go back to Jamaica I’ll be checking it out! And it’s outside of the usual touristy spots.

RAGAMUFFIN HOSTEL – KINGSTON

- This was the highest rated hostel I found, heard a lot of good stuff about it, and it’s showing a good review of their wifi on their booking.com listing. I didn’t stay here as they only have dormitory rooms, but if you’re open to dormitory rooms looks like this is one of the best spots in Jamaica (and pretty affordable)

Germaican Hostel – Port Antonio

- These guys have flawless ratings, it is a pretty remote spot – but it’s on the top of a hill overlooking the beach, it’s pretty damn sweet. Unfortunately they’re closed on the off season so we couldn’t stay there, but we went up to check it out and it looks like a killer spot.

mobay kotch – montego bay
- These guys have a great rated hostel in Montego Bay, and it’s super centrally located. Unfortunately, the hostel was full the nights we stayed in Montego Bay so we couldn’t stay there – so if you want to book – book ahead!

RoK HOTEL – KINGSTON

- I did stay at this spot, I put this further down on the list as it’s a bit more expensive, and it’s a bit more pretentious, but it is a cool hotel close to the art district in Kingston so if you’re flying in and out of Kingston, worth checking out.

Co-Works & My Favorite Places To Work From
A Map of The Cafes & Co-works I Worked From
frida kafe
- OVERALL – 4/5 – Killer spot in central Montgo Bay.
- Wifi – 3/5 – The wifi is plenty fast enough for video calls
- Download Speed = 71 MBPS*
- Upload Speed = 45 MBPS
- Avg. Latency = 73 MS
- *Not sure what these metrics mean? Read my guide to getting fast wifi here.
- Service & Friendliness – 5/5 – The staff was super attentive and friendly.
- Amount Of Outlets – 4/5– Have a section a bit more dedicated to labtops with plenty of outlets
- Amenities (Places to take calls, etc.) – 3/5 – This is a cafe, not a cowork – but I did see a couple folks on video calls – so you could probably pull an internal call off.
Video taken at Frida Kafe – love this place
Cafe Blue
- OVERALL – 4/5 – This is a chain with a couple locations around Jamaica, but the one in Irish town was the best one! (video below)
- Wifi – 4/5 – Super fast wifi (from the Irish Town location)
- Download Speed = 82.3 MBPS
- Upload Speed = 96.1 MBPS
- Avg. Latency = 47 MS
- Service & Friendliness – 5/5 – The staff was super attentive and friendly. They were also totally cool with me camping out and working from there.
- Amount Of Outlets – 3/5– Not a crazy amount of outlets, but definitely enough.
- Amenities / Ergonomics (Places to take calls, standup desks etc.) – 2/5 – It’s not super loud there, and with the wifi speed you could take video calls from there, but it isn’t really built for coworking per se.
Finding Community / Making Friends
Interested In Building Community As A Nomad? I interviewed 9 other digital nomads to come up with a complete digital nomad guide to building community, check it out!
Jamaicans are super outgoing, and easy to make friends with, we had plenty of Jamaicans who chatted with us, showed us around – even one who took us shopping around at a market. All without wanting anything in return.
Now there are plenty of scammers there too, but it’s generally pretty easy to distinguish them after a few days.
As far as meeting other digital nomads / travelers there aren’t a ton of expats in their 20’s – 40’s who are travelling a lot / working online. So that can be a bit more tricky.
For most travellers to Jamaica these are people who travel 1 – 2x a year for a week to two weeks, so finding people like you may be a bit more tricky.
While talking a lot of shit about all inclusive resorts I do have to say that we spent 2 nights in one and it was fun, and quite easy to meet other people.
If it’s the only way you’re experiencing Jamaica – I think that’s unfortunate, but a couple nights can be quite fun.
Transportation
- Getting There & Leaving
- Admittedly I rented a car, but did see plenty of buses.
- Getting Around
- UBER – it is available there, and service is quite quick!
What I Ate
- Breadfruit! This stuff is absolutely delicious, and super unique (see the round fruits in the background)

- Oxtail – this stuff is delicious, if you haven’t tried it yet, you gotta try it out!
- Curry Goat – huge fan of this as well

What I Drank
The Appleton Estate tour was kickass man! A couple hours from Kingston
Book the kickass appleton estate tour here
- Appleton Estate – specifically the Appleton Estate 21 Year
- This rum is a great one! After doing a blind taste test of the rums of Jamaica, this was the one I liked the most.
- Worthy Park
- Great rum! Came in as number 2 after the blind tasting
- Wray and Nephew White Overproof Rum
- This rum is kickass, but is is strong as hell – so just be aware!
- Wray and Nephew – Rum cream
- Super delicious rum cream, highly recommend!
A blind tasting of the rums of Jamaica, I didn’t add the Wray and Nephews to this one, it’s super unique and I would’ve been able to spot it out too easily.
Exercise / Outdoors

Nature –
The Blue Mountains are absolutely gorgeous, as you can see. I was on a boot the whole time I was there – but if we’re lucky enough to make it back I will be hiking in the blue mountains!
I would recommend checking out AllTrails, they have up to date trail info all around the world, and a bad ass option where you can download the trails and see where you’re at on the trail even without wifi. Check out all the awesome functionality AllTrails has here.
A function I used a lot on my hike through the Vicentina Trail in Portugal.
Exercise
Blue Mountain Peak Hike
As mentioned above, unfortunately I wasn’t able to personally experience this hike but will definitely be checking out Blue Mountain when I come back!
jacobs ladder
Jacob’s Ladder is one of the more memorable hikes Jamaica has to offer. It’s basically a steep staircase carved into the hillside that’ll leave your legs burning but reward you with sweeping views once you reach the top. It’s not the easiest climb, but it’s the kind of challenge that makes you pause, catch your breath, and take in a side of Jamaica that’s far from the resort image most people expect.
